Chapter 11

The next week cruised by much too fast. After a long training day on Saturday, Maddie and the crew met at Perry’s Pizza Parlor, the tantalizing aroma of garlic, spices and cheese teasing her nose, making her mouth water. She sat crunched between Ricky and Lance in the corner booth, with Cameron on the other side of Lance. Grady faced Maddie from across the corner booth. She hadn’t wanted to sit right next to him, thinking that would be safer, but now she sat across from him and she couldn’t get away from his midnight-blue eyes.

She couldn’t afford to let Grady distract her. She had to keep her focus on training for the regatta, maintaining her self-control, her command of the situation and her crew. When it came to Grady, her thoughts were frazzled. She almost wished she were positioned at the Crescent Moon’s bow so Grady would be behind her, and she wouldn’t have to constantly watch his trim, athletic form in action, which only made her think about his arms around her. And that kiss. Followed by that thoughtful apology that showed he understood she didn’t need a romantic distraction. He realized how important the regatta was to her.

Maddie fought the dreamy sigh that almost escaped her lips.

If the guys were to sense that she had a thing for Grady, it could throw this perfect synergy they’d obtained way off course. But sitting across from him, looking into those lake-water eyes, might just be worse.

Plus, she needed time to figure out exactly what it was that drew her to him. She didn’t know him that well. But how long did it take? She’d had a lifetime with her parents, and that hadn’t prepared her for their big reveal. Maddie shoved those thoughts far away. Tonight she wanted to enjoy a camaraderie she hadn’t experienced in a long time. Even with Taylor around, there’d been some tension between him and the rest, but not with Grady.

They’d ordered two large pizzas—one pepperoni and one supreme. Tunes from the seventies and eighties played on the old jukebox in the far corner, and the lights were low for the Saturday-evening crowd. Maddie stretched, searching for a little elbow room between Ricky and Lance. Feeling more content than she had in a long time, she released a small sigh.

They’d sailed four times this week, training for the regatta, which was only three weeks out. Grady was a natural. He was amazing. Why hadn’t she trusted Taylor about him from the beginning? Really, her stubbornness had been about Taylor, not about Grady’s abilities. Her need to control the situation could have cost them Grady.

She watched him caught up in a conversation with Cameron about boat repair. She heard more about epoxy, fiberglass and boat motors than she ever wanted to hear. Those two had a lot in common and, from the sounds of it, knew their stuff. Grady got along with everyone—he was one smooth sailor. But the old cliché made her wonder if there wasn’t something wrong just under the surface to mess with her world.
